Even in literature and art, no man who bothers about originality will ever be original: whereas if you simply try to tell the truth (without caring twopence how often it has been told before) you will, nine times out of ten, become original without ever having noticed it. - C.S. Lewis
This is a rather new situation. I've hardly contemplated what I'm going to write about this entry. Typically, I'll mull over topics for a couple of weeks and write about events or issues that I feel are particularly pertinent. In this case, I'm just going to start and see where it goes.
Follow-up Last time, I mentioned that I had a great deal of school work coming up. I'm proud to say that most of it was executed flawlessly. My presentation in Business Spanish went excellently. I was responsible for detailing my project to the class through a Powerpoint presentation. I think that I organized the slides pretty well, and I was able to speak fairly fluidly. (Though I'm still trying to eliminate 'um' from my vocab.) I wasn't the best, but I certainly wasn't the worst either - as some of the presentations were downright tedious to observe. In a couple of cases, students decided that filling up slides with massive amounts of text (and no pictures) and then reading verbatim would be a good strategy. Not so. I think I'm being overly critical. Everyone knew their stuff, and no one was really that awful. A few could just use a bit of a brush up on their presentation skills.
The tests, paper, portfolio, and exams went off similarly well. That Analog Electronics class that I was so worried about? I B-ed it. After that class, I feel much more competent in my EE skills. I no longer feel lost in one of my majors (though there's still a long road ahead). For the first time in my life, voltage division doesn't panic me. Despite this, the decision to drop Communication Systems was still probably very wise. Over the half of that class ended up failing. It was really nice to finish with everything. Not having anything hanging over my head is really nice.
Oh, and my school situation is no longer in limbo. I will be taking classes in the spring. So, I'm pretty relieved about that.
The Real Reason for the Internet As school was wrapping up, I finally gave into my brother's requests and signed up on Facebook. I'd tried to get everyone to sign up on Friendster months ago, but I had a hard time selling too many people on it. I'd resisted Facebook out of a combination of resentment and not having time. Well, once I finally gave in, I discovered that it's a really cool site. The class and group features are neat ideas. In fact, the only advantage that Friendster has over the site is the ability to show multiple photos. Anyway, I've been wasting quite a bit of time on the site lately, and I created a group for Spanish majors.
Hopefully, I can use Facebook to keep in touch with people somewhat. A lot of people have now left or are leaving Auburn. As I mentioned in the last entry, Natalie's gone. She graduated and is going to work at a ski resort in Colorado. It's my hope that a group of us can get out to visit her over spring break. This semester also saw the departure of Leigh. Before that, Cat left. I believe Susan and Sara are next in line. It's all rather sad.
Moving Picture Shows & Nooga I've also managed to see a number of movies over the break. After school ended, I had to work a few days, but while I was in Auburn, I saw "Ocean's 12" with Kev and D. Soderbergh's one of my favorite directors, and he does a great job with the movie. The all-star cast acts and cooperates as well as they did in the last one. The film's chock full of plot twists. In fact, I struggle to think of another movie that has as many. It must've taken a long time for writers to wrap their brain around the whole story. Oh, and I really enjoyed Eddie Izzard's cameo. =)
Once I got back to Chattanooga, I lazed for a couple of days before being social. Patrick and I met a bunch of guys at IHOP for dinner. Most of them were guys that I graduated with - David A, Zac, Jeremy, Glenn, Wes, Brian, and Nathan. As we sat around the table talking, we realized that Patrick and Zac are the only two of us that are currently tied down. With Jordan now in limbo, and the Davids on the other side of relationships, that's a lot of us that are single. I'm not quite sure what it means (if it means anything at all).
Afterwards, a few of them came back to my place to play p-game and watch movies. First, we watched "Napoleon Dynamite". The dry, offbeat humor was somewhat reminiscent of a Wes Anderson movie. I'd like to watch it again soon in a less distracting environment as I enjoyed the first viewing.
Once most everyone had cleared out, I watched "The Tao of Steve", a movie that had come highly recommended by David W. It follows a guy who gets his philosophy on women from Steve McQueen. "Be desireless. Be excellent. Be gone." Essentially, it's "Swingers" with a more romantic comedy bent. I'm not completely sure that I liked the ending, but it was pretty enjoyable nonetheless.
The next day, the Davids wanted to go do something, so we met up at the new movie theater in town. It's huge and quite new-fangled - pretty video boards for the menus at the concession stands. DW and I wanted to see "Spanglish", but DA wasn't going for it, so we saw "Meet the Fockers" instead. Like the first one, it was a really funny movie. I liked that it didn't necessarily have the feel of most comedy sequels - it was a new chapter that continued the story in a believable way. Be forewarned that it's currently one of the raunchiest movies around. I guess what I'm saying is that it's not for kids. =)
After we left the movie, we went downtown to Taco Mac for a spell. While waiting on Jordan (who was stuck in traffic in Indiana for hours), we caught up on all the happenings of the semester. Jordan didn't actually make it in that night, but fortunately, we got to visit with him a bit over the next two days.
Joker Got Away As the next day was Christmas Eve, I decided to go shopping with Jonathan. Waiting until the last second is part of the fun. The adventure to the mall area was surprisingly painless. There was a bit of traffic and the stores were somewhat crowded, but I was able to find what I wanted to get everyone after stopping at three stores.
That night, I was quite tired and fell fast asleep. Thus, as I'd been first to bed, I awoke before my brother and sister for the first time in many many Christmaseseses. We had the usual breakfast casserole before opening presents in front of the fireplace. I love my fireplace. It's warm. I like standing in front of it and getting the back of my pants hot and then sitting on my knees. It's like getting warm clothes out of the dryer whenever you want.
Oh, and I got a pretty good haul this year: Looney Tunes Golden Collection Vol. 2, Futurama Vol. 4, Seinfeld Vol. 1 & 2, Mario Party 6, and some good books.
Then yesterday, I came down to the cousins' place near Auburn, where I'll stay for a few days. Unfortunately, I have to work on the 30th and 31st, so no New Year's Eve party for me. =( I'll likely head back up to Chattanooga after that for a few days before going on a retreat.
Yeah, so if I think of anything else, I might append... or I might just make another entry. I'm spontaneous like that.
