Random Reflections
Sitting in English class the other day, I recorded a few random musings...

In a room full of people and one person speaking, is anyone listening? I know that I'm not. It's not that I don't respect the speaker. I hold him in high esteem. However, my mind wanders and drifts superfluously nonetheless.

It's been weeks since I really looked at the sky, and it's not as if I've been holed up inside. I'm not talking about a mere glance - catching it in my peripheral vision. I'm talking about staring up at it and being blown away by its immensity. I'm not sure why I haven't looked. I guess I take it for granted that it will hang there above me. Draw appropriate parallels.

'Immensity' and 'immenseness'...both noun forms of the adjective 'immense'...both mean the same thing. 'Intensity' and 'intenseness' are the same way. So too 'rapidity' and 'rapidness'. 'Stupidity' and 'stupidness' redundant still. And yet, not all adjectives turn into noun forms both ways. 'Quickness' is a word while 'quickity' is not. This all leads to an interesting question posed by Jialin...what is the quality of being 'itty-bitty'? 'Itty-bittiness' sounds right, but 'itty-bittity' sounds more fun.

Last Week's Cliffhanger
So most of you noticed the note at the end of the last entry. Several of you thought it was a note from when I was young that I'd scanned in. Others of you thought it was just a joke. Well, it was a bit of a joke, but it was real. Basically, I was sitting in the SGA meeting later that day. I'd mentioned to Mallory that I was thinking about asking Kristin on a date. She suggested that I write a note. The "circle one" aspect just struck me as funny. It all seemed to be pretty positively received. I wrote her an e-mail within the next couple of days and asked when she'd like to make plans. I didn't get a reply. The next Sunday, I saw her at the football game and asked in passing if she was planning to write back. She said something about having a hectic week. The next night at SGA, I mentioned something again in passing. She said, "Well, I didn't want to e-mail you back. I wanted to talk to you in person. Basically, I'm not really looking for anything right now." "Oh. Okay. No big deal." Seriously though, why the heck did she circle 'Yes'? If she'd circled 'No', it wouldn't've been a big deal...just would've played off like a joke. My luck though, eh? =)

Mr. Bighead
Anyway, the rest of the week following the last entry was filled with school stuff. I'd had an English paper on Candide and Frankenstein that I'd been putting off. It was actually "due" before I wrote the last entry, but I decided to use my two grace days and turn it in on the following Wednesday. Turns out, being procrastinatal, I still didn't have it done. Some of you may recall that I've occasionally managed to turn in papers some months after they're actually due. In this case, I did actually do it Friday morning expecting to be docked a letter grade. Well, when I got it back this week, the professor was really impressed. In fact, he decided that it had been "worth the wait" and decided to override his late policy. Seems that he had a lot more fun reading my paper than a lot of the others. Here's a quote: "Believe me, a paper that has this much basic intelligence and care put into it is (unfortunately) more rare than you might imagine in Great Books. Thanks." Care? I wrote it in two hours before class and never even proofread it. I think this serves as a testament to the teaching ability of my highschool English teachers. He also asked if he could use my paper (anonymously) as an example for the rest of the class. I think my head was probably inflated by a couple of sizes as a result.

As if that weren't enough, I pulled a 97 on his two-part mid-term and a 96 on the Linguistics mid-term. Are those even real grades? They're elementary school grades - the type of grades that leave me expecting gold star stickers at the top. Liberal arts classes...particularly the core ones...have for some reason always been easy-peasy for me. Now engineering classes...those are a bit of a different story.

The one other note of interest from the week. I went to lunch with Marianne, the girl from my Linguistics class. Found out we have a lot in common and the conversation was great. Also found out she has a boyfriend. ;)

Sports Mania
After a school-filled week, Zac came in for the weekend. We were actually supposed to have a few other Tennessee fans come in, but there were some schedule conflicts, so Wes ended up being the only one (and he just came by on game day). Zac and I spent a decent amount of time on Friday vegging out with video games. The next day, Auburn managed to beat the pants off of Tennessee. They didn't quite cream them like it looked like they would after the first quarter, but it was a good victory nonetheless.

The Braves also won that night, so things were looking up in the sports world. Unfortunately, the Braves threw it away a couple of days later and another postseason went down the drain. The past couple of years, we were such a weak team that we hardly expected to be there...so the postseason was just a bonus. This year, we seemed particularly strong, so it was particularly frustrating to lose. I hope the Red Sox manage to come back on the Yankees. If not, I guess I don't mind rooting for the Cubs, though I'm still a bit pissed at the fans for the mocking. Bad winners suck.

Uninhibited
On Sunday night, I was having a conversation with Natalie when, feeling uninhibited, I admitted something. Basically, I gave her a pretty big compliment; I told her that she was one of three girls that I knew that are the type of girl that I'd like to marry. She seemed to take it positively despite being a bit confused. This led me to throw caution to the wind...so I admitted the same thing to the two others - Jialin and Elisa. They also took it pretty positively and thanked me for flattering them. It was kind of nice to finally get that out in the open.

Guess I haven't given it a whole lot of thought since...though I do feel like Natalie and I talked a lot more this week. I've also had a couple of extended conversations with Jialin...mostly about whether it's worth it to try to get to know someone better when in all likelihood, you'll never meet them in person. Elisa, on the other hand...well, I haven't seen her in weeks. I've invited her to hang out a few times, but something's always come up. Basically, I've told her that at this point, the ball's in her court (to use a Mr. Pound phrase). I don't really expect an invitation any time soon. S'kinda sad. I was hoping to be better friends with her, Kiki, and Mallory this year. As it stands, I rarely see them anymore.

Garblechev
On Monday night, Ray and I went to see Gorbachev speak. I was expecting that he'd speak in English but they ended up having a translator. Seemed to surprise a lot of other people also. The first ten minutes were hard to understand since Gorbachev's mic level was higher than the translator's. They figured it out after a while though and the rest of the speech went well. He spoke on several controversial issues - I thought his call for the US to normalize relations with Cuba was good.

Terror Has No Shape
The rest of the week was business as usual. That brings us up to this weekend. Several of us got together for Scotty's birthday on Thursday night. Hope we cheered him up a bit with the cake. Friday night was rather somber. I felt like everyone else was either in a bad mood or bored. I don't think I alleviated it by putting on "Mr. Accident" (starring Yahoo Serious from "Young Einstein") in the background. It's a pretty funny movie...if you're accepting of movies like me. Kevin and Scotty are pretty negative on almost every movie that I enjoy though. Anyway, the night wound down with Ray and I playing Kevin and D in Spades. Ray and I did pretty well at first, but ended up going down in a blaze. Being competitive, we sometimes get a little frustrated with each other in the course of a game, but we're usually fine afterwards.

The next day, we got up "early" to watch Auburn narrowly beat Arkansas. I'm a bit curious as to the last time an unranked team beat two top ten teams two (how's that for alliteration?) weeks in a row. We managed to get Scotty to say some positive things during the game though I think I recall him blowing up at me once over some stale chips. Afterwards, he, Ray, and I sat around and watched the 80's remake of "The Blob". The effects were cheesy, but it was interesting since it was a bit of a parody of horror movies.

Crazy Party Time: Offensive Driving
That night, Ray and I cleaned and rearranged the furniture to open up the living room a bit. Everyone was pretty late per usual. I was expecting we'd have some new people, but it was mostly the usual crowd. Mafia's a bit frustrating for Kevin, Ray, and I since we either have a tendency to die the first night or get checked by the nightwatchmen. It's become pretty impossible to win.

In the interest of mixing things up, we decided to play hide and go seek in cars later last night. I hadn't played in around two years...and I don't think I've mentioned it before in the journal. Basically, the first night I really met Kevin, we were hanging out with a guy named Pickwick. We were just driving around campus and exploring alleys and sidewalks when we decided to call Pickwick and tell him to find us. We gave him a couple of clues. This led to us making up the game. We made the boundaries "on campus" and set time limits. A few weeks later, the game had evolved to allow multiple seeking carloads and one hiding carload.

Anyway, last night, we left around 11 and played for 3-4 hours - first with three cars, then two. The rounds went as follows...Ray's car found Robert's car at the athletic dorms. Robert's car found Ray's car at the practice field. Ray's car found my car at the Pharmacy building. My car was unable to find Ray's car near the Chemistry building. Ray's car found our car near the Aerospace building. Basically, I was really disappointed with my performance. Apparently, our (my carload's) hiding spots were pretty good, but our clues were too good, and we had a hard time interpreting the others' clues. Guess I'll just have to brainstorm while walking around campus this week.

Blah
That brings us up to today...which was rather blah. I slept quite a bit, dreamed quite a bit, but it was mostly nightmares. I don't have nightmares very often, but this morning's dreams were mostly semi-scary. Towards the end of the dream, I recall feeling really disoriented. I was inside my house as a kid, on my bed, looking out the window. I had the overwhelming feeling that the entire house was falling very fast and I kept waiting for it to hit the ground. Basically, my equilibrium was all messed up when I tried to walk. I don't really put much stock in dreams normally having a lot of significance, but it did leave me feeling uneasy after waking up.

I spent most of the rest of the evening finishing the third Harry Potter book. I'm a little frustrated that I liked it as much as I did - I'm not a fan of getting caught up in such a widespread and very contemporary cultural fad. I didn't read the first two, but I was compelled by Cassie to read this one. I guess I'll actually be looking forward to the movie next year.

I have a presentation and other random homework this week, but I've mostly got everything caught up. It's nice not having a lot of stress looming, but I'm feeling uneasy for some reason.

"My luck though, eh?"

New entry coming soon, I promise.

Posted by marchant @ 10/28/2003 02:02 PM CST

Puppynapkin, did any of your friends go see the NFL game last night at Sun Devil Stadium? I wish I were there. You could get in just by giving a donation for the fire damages in San Diego.

Posted by Jeremy @ 10/28/2003 01:57 PM CST

The Marlins won, my WS prediction was right--celebration is over. I promised no more gloating.

Posted by Jeremy @ 10/26/2003 10:53 PM CST

and the yankees lost. :biggest grin ever:

i really did boycott the world series this year... but they announced it when i was at U of A... stupid stadium announcers.

And now, ladies and gentlemen, A NEW RECORD!!!!!!!!

Posted by Jeremy @ 10/23/2003 10:46 PM CST

Actually, this post makes it 34...which ties last entry's record. Sorry for the delay in a new entry...I just haven't felt extremely motivated to do much lately.

Posted by marchant @ 10/23/2003 05:39 PM CST

yes, it truly does take a male to be retarded.

Posted by puppynapkin @ 10/23/2003 01:17 PM CST

I couldn't agree more. Indeed, it must take a male to truly understand what's been going on in here. It has really sounded bad the whole way through, but at the same time was funny. There were never any hard feelings here either.

By the way, Marchant, did we all set a new record for most comments in one of your entries (so far 32)?

Posted by Jeremy @ 10/22/2003 10:51 PM CST

Yea. That's fine. Good natured (in the internet sense) sports flaming. It just makes sports more fun if there are internal rivalries and bragging rights involved. I think Marit and puppy thought the hatred was real. It takes a male to understand I guess. At least I hope you didn't take it seriously. Nothing you said affected me or even occurred to me 2 minutes after I left this page and I'm sure it was the same for you.

Now the "shutting the h--- up" and sunday school post I did honestly find funny. I've debated with Marchant a lot about the hypocrisy of some christians giving christianity a bad name. (this is not directed at you, but it reminded me of that idea).

Posted by an out of tune banjo @ 10/22/2003 09:05 PM CST

That's exactly why I assumed/knew you weren't responding! Like I said, I was putting it back in your face because your Cubbies lost.

By the way, I'm on a break from my night class, and it just so happens to be 20 minutes since you posted your last entry.

Posted by Jeremy @ 10/22/2003 06:03 PM CST

Jek/Marchant knows who I am. I'm not hiding. Even if I said my real name you wouldn't know who it was (that's not an insult, just truth). I just like abusing the "Posted By" line. Marchant doesn't like it when he doesn't get any comments, so I make sure to rile things up a bit (haven't seen this many comments in a long time). I have to practice throwing flame-bait around for the college sports forums anyway. So, he's happy, and I get better at inane flaming. Everything works out!

Jeremy, the post I had about you not replying yet was poking fun at your assumption that the reason I didn't post for a few days was due to my embarrassment of the Cubs losing. It was also poking fun at all the people that honestly DO think that if you don't post within 20 minutes you must be too scared to reply. The Cubs were the reason, but it was because my mind was so pre-occupied with them that I forgot about a lot of things, including this page.

Sports sure bring people together, don't they?

Posted by Marit @ 10/22/2003 05:20 PM CST

marchant, hey i know i can be violent sometimes... but sheesh... this is the worst. i guess i'll pass up the opportunity to say something bitter, mean and sarcastic today. there's enough hatred here already.

Posted by puppynapkin @ 10/22/2003 03:32 PM CST

You are messed up, garfield sticker. Just shut-up and go get a life.

By the way, stop being such a wus and put your real name with your comments.

Hey, cool it, people.

Since it doesn't matter what I imply as long as I put dashes instead of letters. So, F--- everyone. God can eat s---. You all can lick my d---. Jeremy is a f---ing f--.

(I don't agree with any of what is implied. This is more of what is posted below.)

I'm on the computer for the first time today right now. My fall break ends today and I DO have a life, by the way. So don't worry, I'm never too scared to respond in a diary comment box, and I'm proving it right now.

I'm actually pretty surprised to see all that has been written in this comment box in the last 24 hours. Everybody who wrote stuff made me laugh out loud. You guys are funny (especially marit).

First of all, you do have a good point, dust. I was just really excited that the Cubs and Red Sox lost because I think it's awesome seeing them continue to lose under their respective "curses," (as bad as that may sound). Plus the fact that Florida came back against the odds in their series only added to my excitement. AND, since you threw my Braves-Cubs prediction back in MY face when the Braves lost, I felt like throwing my Cubs-Marlins prediction back in YOUR face when the Cubs lost. But, like I said, you had a good point in your comment, and I guess I gloated a little too much. So, sorry for that.

Secondly, the comment from "nutrition label" was funny too. I intentionally censored "hell" with "h---" in my comment. So what's the problem, besides you being an idiot? I won't comment on any more comments like that again simply because they're stupid.

Posted by Jeremy @ 10/21/2003 09:38 PM CST

WOW! Jeremy hasn't responded yet. Certainly it's not because he has other things in his life to do. It must be because he is scared of me and doesn't want to come here to post!

Posted by the hair on your shower drain @ 10/21/2003 08:10 PM CST

Oh. And I forgot. Using "shutting the hell up" in the same post as talking about Sunday School kind of describes you thoroughly doesn't it Jeremy? Living in the sewers while polishing the manholes.

Posted by a nutrition label @ 10/21/2003 07:29 PM CST

Hiyawlo. You know who this is Jer-IChangeMyPredictionsTooSuitMyEgo-emy? That's right. I am the shoes in your closet, the guacamole stain on your trousers, and now...dust.

Sorry I haven't been on here to pat you on the back for the glory that is you.

Since I am back let me see what I can drudge up:

"The Braves will beat the Cubs in five games, but the Marlins will beat the Yankees in the World Series. (Zac picks the Braves over the A's in the WS.)

Posted by Jeremy @ 10/01/2003 01:08 PM CST "

Let's see. Your predictions...not so correct are they? It only fits the persona of the braves fans I don't like. "I'll just change whatever I say to make me appear good." "Oh. The Braves are winning. Yay! Go Braves. I've always been a Braves fan." "Oh. Braves are losing. I've never been a baseball fan anyway."

It shows how ridiculous you are by actually GLOATING when the Cubs lose. No-one knows about the Cubs supposed curse more than Cubs fans. So what is your point? If you asked any true Cubs fans they would say they were nervous as hell even with a 3-1 advantage. We just expect the Cubs to let us down. Eternal Hope. Eternal Gloom. That's the life of a Cubs fan. So pointing out the curse when the Cubs lose is like running up to a guy with no arms, that dropped his hat. "HAHA! You don't have any arms to pick up that hat!"

And gloating about flawed predictions is not exactly great either? You missed out on the Braves thing. "But oh...I got the other ones right so I'm incredible!" Objectively 80% of the population would pick the yankees in the world series since they are...well the yankees. For your information I picked the Cubs over the Braves and Cubs vs. Yankees in the world series. So let's see, that gives me 2 right and 1 wrong. You have...2 right and one wrong. What is your reason for gloating over yours?

Posted by the dust under your couch @ 10/21/2003 07:23 PM CST

Dear Jeremy,

By all means, please continue to overwhelm me with future displays of immaturity and pettiness. I see now that refraining from prancing around and squealing "I told you so, nyah nyah!" is entirely too difficult for you to manage. I wouldn't want you to strain yourself.

Posted by Marit @ 10/16/2003 05:16 PM CST

Hey Guacamole, where are you now? Where are you now? Your sucking Cubbies just won't get away from that Curse, will they? Ha Ha. And the sports experts said, "There is no way the Marlins will win with Prior pitching in Game 6 and Wood in Game 7." Well, guess what--they did!!!!

face it marchant, you like trendy things every once in a while. maybe it has nothing to do with the fact that it's trendy... but still... you like certain things that just happen to be trendy.

admit it and get over it. who cares if you like jnco jeans AND they were popular? (their popularity was more widespread than you thought actually)

and once and for all... if that many people keep saying that they're good books... they're most likely good books. geeze... you're frustrating. (to say the least)

Posted by puppynapkin @ 10/13/2003 12:22 PM CST

Marchant, you have every right to feel good about the paper thing. I've had a couple of experiences with doing something rushed at the last minute and the teacher saying that it kicked butt. It's one of the greatest feelings in the world. So, your "bragging" is well-deserved.

By the way, Britney Spears does indeed kick butt. I wish she would tone down the "sexualness" of her performances though.

Posted by Jeremy @ 10/13/2003 10:21 AM CST

'widespread', Marit. That's the key there. Jncos nor Blink 182 were that widespread. And, I realize you might come at me over actually liking Britney Spears since her music was more widespread, but here's the thing though...I didn't expend hours of my time in order to listen. Books require a different level of investment that I'm not usually willing to give when they're at their peak of their popularity. I planned to read the books eventually, but there's something in me that strains against reading them now when everyone says, "They're sooo good! You should read them!" I've never known people to be so insistent about anything. I feel like they're trying to brain-wash me or something. Maybe it's irrational, but I can't help drawing back.

Additionally, I put forth some effort...I thought critically. I just didn't spend a lot of time on it. I guess I can post it if you'd like. I'd hoped that putting a disclaimer about the fact that I'd get arrogant would help. Regardless, I'm sorry for being an ass about the paper thing.

Posted by marchant @ 10/13/2003 09:46 AM CST

Oh, and I guess I've filled my meanness quota, but I just can't resist:

"I'm not a fan of getting caught up in such a widespread and very contemporary cultural fad."

This, coming from Mr. 8-pairs-of-JNCO-jeans-in-one-night? The guy who loved Blink 182?

But JNCO jeans fit me and I needed jeans! you say. But Blink 182 is good! you say. (Oh, let's not forget the oft-spoken "I listened to them BEFORE they were popular!") Well fine, there's nothing wrong with liking a particular clothing label or a band, but maybe, just MAYBE, people like the Harry Potter series because it's GOOD, not because everyone but you has somehow been fooled by the media into mindlessly clutching at the latest best-seller.

Posted by Marit @ 10/13/2003 07:56 AM CST

I think your teacher's comment also speaks volumes about the quality of your average classmate. AWESOME!!!

And wow, not putting forth effort and then having the nerve to brag about how great you are anyway is TOTALLY KICK-ASS! WOO HOO!!!

Okay, that was mean.

But I'm not taking it back. Sheesh.

Posted by Marit @ 10/13/2003 07:44 AM CST

haha... knew you'd like it. it's not about the fad, it's about the fact that it's a damn good book. :o)

oh yeah... that guy... tuesday night... i'm askin' that question you told me to. i think it'll go over well. :o)

thanks march!
