4:59am...I'm an idiot. Why do I do this? It's been going on most of the past week. Friday night, I stayed up quite late and slept into the afternoon on Saturday. Saturday night, I stayed up until 6am Sunday morning. I slept until 7pm Sunday night. Let me reiterate the 'idiot' part.

Happy Birthday To Me
When we left off a little over a week ago, I'd just turned 21. Friday night was somewhat similar to Thursday night with a few twists. Basically, Scotty, D, and Kevin came over and Ray had a free night. I also walked around the corner to Mallory's for a while. We talked for a while, catching up in the process. Basically, she's in a "tough" situation with this guy that she really likes in Memphis. The "tough" part is that it's long distance...but within driving distance certainly doesn't make it impossible.

Anyway, I stayed up fairly late that night and woke up on Saturday afternoon. My brother mentioned something about taking me out to dinner since he'd "forgotten" about my birthday on Thursday (he actually just thought Friday was the 18th). As the evening turned to night, he suggested that we go out. This struck me as a little strange...it was Saturday night...he knew that people were coming over. He said that Kevin and D would come over to wait for people while we went to Mikata for a while. Almost immediately, I realized the plot. "Okay...so how long do we have to stay out so that they can set up?" He owned up to the "surprise" and we went to eat.

Once we got to the restaurant, the real surprise hit. My mom, sister, Jonathan, and Arika were waiting for us. This marks two years in a row that I've actually gotten surprised. I hadn't even really thought of that as a possibility...they'd gone quite far out of their way to come down. Anyway, we had a good dinner and they gave me some presents. What exactly do you do when your 16-year-old sister gives you a bottle of beer? I liked the pajama pants though. I also got "Futurama: Vol. 2" (and I've watched 15 of the 20 episodes this week), another copy of "Scene It", and a game called "Fact Or Crap".

Afterwards, my family came back to the regular Saturday Night Mafia. We had another medium-sized crowd. I don't recall doing very well when I was in the game...me, Ray, or Kevin has a tendency to die the very first night. Ray actually pulled a win as mafia by killing (in order) me, Kevin, and D, and then convincing my mom, my sister, and his girlfriend that he was nightwatchman. My mom was a bit disturbed that she couldn't tell when he lied. As the night wound down, we played some more "Scene It". At this point, Kevin, D, Ray, Scotty, and I have played it so much that we've already had what seems like half of the questions.

Boring School Stuff
Sunday night marked the first "buckling-down" of the semester. I went over to study for E-mag with Brian and a friend of his. Going into the study session, I felt completely ill-prepared for the test. Strangely, it's the only test I've had so far...most of my classes have mid-terms in the next week or two. Anyway, after putting in six to seven hours of crunching, I felt decently prepared. Turns out that it pulled me a 63. That might sound bad, but the class average was a 59 and another pal of mine got a 48. I know I've got to do better though.

On Monday I talked more with Kristin on SGA. I've been working on the part of the site that she's involved with, and I think I might ask her out...ya know, like on a date. I get this strong feeling that it might be a repeat of what happened with Megan from the previous entry. But hey, at least I'd get to use the line, right? =)

I slept through a chunk of Tuesday, missing Phonetics and Linguistics for the first time. I wouldn't've missed them except that I realized if there was any day to miss...that would be it. I also missed classes on Wednesday. Basically, after missing 4/5 classes, I was feeling pretty crummy. I managed to get back on track for the Thursday and Friday and it's my goal to not miss any the rest of the semester. We'll see how long that holds. Ever notice how sleep seems much more precious in the morning than at night?
Reality TV Sucks
Tuesday night marked more "Joe Schmo". It's the first time in a while that I recall waiting with anticipation for the next episode of a show. Oh, and on Sunday I started watching "Survivor". Natalie, Kevin, D, Scotty, and Cat have been obsessed with it for a few seasons now. I'd managed to slip through the years without watching more than five minutes, but they finally sucked me in. I couldn't help it...Rupert (the guy that looks/sounds like a pirate) is too compelling. It's not as good as "Joe Schmo", but it's not as bad as most of reality television. It looks as though Thursday night around here will be designated "Survivor" night for a while.

Routine: Name That Place
Back to the log...Friday night was more of the same ol' thing. Actually, now that I think about it, we're really developing a routine like previous years. A couple of years ago, we went over to Devin, Kevin, Ros, and Cat's place. Last year, we went over to Kevin, Andy, and Scuzz's place. Since spring, we've relocated here.

That reminds me...Andy and Mark recently designated their place the Plex (short for Duplex). David W had the A Spot. So...what should we start calling our place? Now that Ray's here, I'm thinking something with our last name would be appropriate. The Davenport Plantation? Davenshire 2: Electric Boogaloo? Casa de Davenport? Davenport Bros. Pizza (DBP)? Feel free to chime in with suggestions.

Western Kentucky, Home of the Hilltoppers
Saturday afternoon, Amber and Paul dropped by before Paul and I headed over to the football game. I spent most of the time going between Paul and his friends, Brian and some other Navs people, and Ray and Natalie. That segues beautifully into a tangent. Randomly, Ray asked Natalie to attend the football game with him. I thought it was pretty funny, and Natalie was cool about it. I wonder what his pledge brothers thought when he brought a senior. As for the game, like a couple of weeks ago, Auburn slaughtered the opponents. We were actually on pace to score 100 points towards the end of the first quarter. I also got to watch the longest field goal in the SEC since 1985. Fifty-seven yards...it was amazing.

After the game, I headed back to my place and found that D and Scotty had cleaned up my place. By 9 or so, turnout was rather low. Honestly, I don't really care that much. I'll reiterate what I've said before...as long as it's fun, numbers really don't matter. After a while, more people showed up and mafia kicked in. DDR was really a bit more of a focus this week though...or at least it seemed that way to me. We also played a few other games late into the night.

Outlook: Busy
That set up the 13-hour sleep fest that I mentioned at the beginning. I've now got class in a few hours...might try to get some more sleep actually. I really need to finish reading "Frankenstein" though. The paper was due Friday, but I've got two grace days. I was hoping to turn it in today, but it's looking more like Wednesday at this point.

The next week or two don't look any less hectic than last week. Gorbachev and Sugar Ray are coming to Auburn, so that ought to be interesting on top of all the normal stuff. I'd also like to make it to Atlanta for a playoff game, but I'm not sure if that will pan out. Well, I really need to occupy myself otherwise, so I'll stop this entry here. Thanks for reading.

Apparently I've been going about this all the wrong way.

Hey there Marchant. I happened to think to check your journal, randomly, for the first time in eons. Happy Birthday! Congrats on being 21. It's the last birthday you have that matters. I turned 22 this week and nothing feels different AT ALL. Boring. ;) Good luck with classes and all this semester, and I'll IM you sometime on my new SN. Oh yeah, and see ya at NCSC in a few weeks in DC! If you want any MUN advice, lemme know.

But Marchant, the Buckner error, at that time of the game and series? What are the odds of that happening? First, the odds are low that any infielder will let a slow ground ball go thru his legs (unless he plays for Detroit). Secondly, you would be extra sure to NOT let that happen at that point in the game.
It is strange that before or during the series, he said he had thoughts of losing a series-clinching game on something stupid such as letting a ball go thru his legs. And then it happened. It's almost as if the Sox are destined to lose (via the Curse). Go Yankees!

geeze, i hate how some people can't lighten up and take sports like it's meant to be (for fun!). who cares anyways? win or lose, they still make more money than most teachers (not professors).

Go Nads!

I care when the Braves win. The only fans that don't really seem to care if their team wins are Cubs fans. Here's the thing...Atlanta has been a bit spoiled, but it means that we're used to high-quality baseball. When the Braves were playing great this season, attendance picked up quite a bit. Regardless, I can't help what other fans do. All I can do is watch whenever I can and support the team. I'll have you know that I watched every game that I could.

As for the tomahawk chop...I usually only see it when we've got a runner on base. If we did it this postseason with no one on base, it was only because we were trying to get pumped up after playing like crap. Finally, the Braves chop has far surpassed the FSU chop. Teams rip each other off all the time...'big blue', the Imperial March, etc. The group that really widely popularizes it gets credit in my book.

i met a guy from atl. today and he said he noticed that a lot of braves fans are fair weather friends... and all they like to do is complain when the braves lose but not care too much when they win.

anyhoo... go cubs!

Posted by pn @ 10/06/2003 06:55 PM CST

ok Jeremole and Marchantole. Take a look at the attendance figures. Cubs haven't won a postseason series in 95 years yet still fans come to their games year-in year-out. Braves attendance is on the decline. They averaged 7,000 less fans per game than the Cubs! My point you ask? Braves fans are the biggest bunch of bandwagon jumpers this side of Apricot Valley. So any criticisms of fans that is not in the bravian direction is pondaferous and ver-ti-baforous. How can you NOT mock the tomahawk chop when the braves fans give it even if there is just a 2 and 0 count? Baes Empty, down by 4, 2-0 count and they start chopping the onions. I can almost bet neither of you watch many games anyway, so you don't know how annoying it is. The braves fans I know that do watch most of the games even tell them to shutup through the tv. It is annoying and they even stole the idea from Florida State University!! The fact you have to steal your team's signature symbol from another team is, in 3 words, pathetic, too pathetic to even take the time to come up with two other words.

Marchant -> Church now.

...an error? They happen. The Sox still had a game 7. They should've won it.

Posted by marchant @ 10/06/2003 01:43 PM CST

I don't think the Red Sox have a chance--not while under the Curse of the Bambino. It has to really be a curse. How else can you explain Bill Buckner's folly in Game 6 of the '86 World Series with two outs in the 9th?

Posted by Jeremy @ 10/06/2003 12:48 PM CST

Le-hooooooooooo-ze-her.

Posted by Marit @ 10/06/2003 06:39 AM CST

The Cubs won, and now I'm torn as to who to pull for. I would've pulled for the Cubs, but their fans acted like jerks with that mock tomahawk chop business. I guess I'll just pull for the Red Sox.

Posted by marchant @ 10/06/2003 12:44 AM CST

Ok, Guacamole, your team finally won a playoff series for the first time in what...95 years? The Braves usually win at least one every 95 weeks. CUBBIES SUCK!!

Posted by Jeremy @ 10/05/2003 11:42 PM CST

the radio overplays EVERY hit song. that's why we should all not listen to the radio... it's evil.

War dang eagle, baby. The Vols can kiss it. Thank you, Tigers. Oh, and "Unwell" is one of the most overplayed songs on the radio. It was ok when it came out in February, but it has been played too much since then.

Posted by Jeremy @ 10/05/2003 03:21 PM CST

matchbox twenty is playing a gig in phoenix in november and the tickets are all free (they come in cases of beer or you can win 'em on the radio) but what sucks is that it's a 21 and over concert. :o( no sexy rob for me.

"i'm not crazy, im just a little unwell
i know right now you can't tell
but stay a while and baby then you'll see
a different side of me"
If there is one song i would love to hear over and over again.... I love Rob Thomas, especially how each song of his sounds so different!!!!!!!!

Took you long enough. What? You've been sitting on the address for two years and you want to talk to me about friendship? Just kidding, man. =)

It wasn't a slight on Stephen...he just hasn't been a major player in the journal's plot as of yet. Anyway, you're right. The cast page was severely lacking without his presence, so I've added him in. Now if only you can convince him to bring his sarcastic wit around more.

Posted by marchant @ 10/04/2003 07:45 AM CST

Hey March,

Hey man, this is my first time to your site, and I noticed that you don't have STEPHEN LEAN, OUR BEST FRIEND all through high school, THE THIRD Friggin' AMIGO, on your cast page. ADD HIM! If you don't, you're a gooche, and we all (except for Jimothy Bloody-toes) know what that means. Anyway man, I dig your site, but this one update is neccesary. Why did you leave him out? HOW did you leave him out? Jesus, buddy, buck up. He was your best friend. Is it because he turned queer on you? He was there for you even when I wasn't, and I love you. Please don't forget your friends.

Much love,
Patrick

The Braves will beat the Cubs in five games, but the Marlins will beat the Yankees in the World Series. (Zac picks the Braves over the A's in the WS.)

Go Cubs. You slept through church?

okay, well i noticed the text forming around the pictures but wasn't sure if that was what you were talking about with "new layout"... yes dear, it's beautiful.

F.Y.I.: Memphis boy troubles are over. He's coming in town this weekend, but I doubt anything good (besides a Radiohead concert with my Memphis friends) will come out of it. R.I.P. Memphis boy... for a while at least.

Posted by Mallory @ 09/30/2003 10:40 AM CST

The new layout is pretty cool. By the way, happy birthday, Marchant, from a couple weeks ago. Also, your Tigers better stick it to the Vols this weekend. I'm sick of Tennessee winning. I hate the Vols.

Posted by Jeremy @ 09/30/2003 09:49 AM CST

Like I made the text conform around the pictures.

Posted by marchant @ 09/30/2003 04:06 AM CST

new layout? like... you added a few more pictures?

how about.... Arrows!!! (kinda like MSG hurting my stomach).... or really like the sign you had on your door forever.

What...like the D-Spot?

On a side note, what does everyone think about the new layout?

Posted by marchant @ 09/29/2003 11:29 PM CST

Your suggestions are too wordy. You need something that rolls off the tongue and is short and catchy. Focus less on descriptive.
